Sexual Health Education
Washington State law requires comprehensive sexual health education in grades K-12.
Wenatchee School District provides age-appropriate instruction designed to help students develop healthy relationships, communicate effectively, make informed decisions about their health, and recognize unsafe situations.
Parent Rights & Involvement
You have the right to:
- Review all instructional materials
- Receive advance notice of sexual health instruction
- Excuse your child from any sexual health lesson
We encourage families to engage in ongoing conversations with their children about values, relationships, and healthy decision-making. Schools and families working together create the strongest foundation for student wellbeing.
Required Topics by Grade Level
The law mandates instruction on the following topics at developmentally appropriate levels:
All Grades (K-12):
- Communication skills for healthy relationships
- Understanding mutual respect and affection
- Recognizing relationships free from violence, coercion, and intimidation
Grades K-3:
- Social-emotional learning
- Interpersonal skills development
- Respectful communication
Grades 5-8:
- Human growth and development
- Abstinence education
- Sexually transmitted disease prevention (starting Grade 5)
- Methods of preventing unintended pregnancy (starting Grade 6)
- Understanding family, peer, community, and media influences on relationships
- Recognizing exploitative relationships
- Age-appropriate consent education and bystander training
Grades 9-12:
- Health care and prevention resources
- Comprehensive pregnancy and STD prevention
- Affirmative consent
- Recognizing and responding safely to relationship violence
- Bystander intervention strategies
- Media literacy and healthy relationship skills
Curriculum and Information by Grade
Sexual health education is taught by trained educators using medically accurate, age-appropriate, state-approved materials. Our goal is to equip students with knowledge and skills to make healthy choices and build respectful relationships throughout their lives.

In our kindergarten class all the way through fourth grade, there is not a sexual health curriculum that we implement in the Wenatchee School District. However, in accordance with School Board Policy 2125, a social emotional learning curriculum will be in place during those formative years.
